Retro-Commissioning (RCx)
Retro-Commissioning (RCx) is the -systematic process for improving an existing building’s performance by identifying and implementing relatively low-cost/no-cost operational and maintenance improvements, helping to confirm their continued performance over time. This is accomplished via process and controls improvements, rather than large equipment purchases. Often considered a “tune up” to existing systems, RCx projects can see significant benefits including:
– Improved occupant comfort and productivity- Longer equipment life- Utility bill energy cost savings resulting in project paybacks of less than 1.5 years.- Reduced Maintenance Costs- Improved Building Operation- Improved Building Systems Efficiency- Details a road map for Capital Improvements- Potential reduction in Carbon Footprint- Assistance in achieving Energy Star and LEED building certifications Researchers at U.S.— Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Portland Energy Conservation Inc., and the Energy Systems Laboratory at Texas A&M University—concluded in a study published in December 2004, that retro commissioning is one of the most cost-effective means of improving energy efficiency in commercial buildings.Analysis of commissioning projects for existing buildings showed a median commissioning cost of US $0.27 per ft2, energy savings of 15 %, and a simple payback period of 0.7 years.
Hunton Services is an approved CenterPoint Retro-Commissioning Agent!

5 Key indicators your Building is a strong candidate for an RCx opportunity:
1. Your Building is > 50,000 square feet and has a working DDC System.2. It has been 3-5 yrs since the last building commissioning, or a major systems change/renovation has occurred3. Energy Consumption & Costs has increased by 10% year after year4. Control Systems have numerous Operator Overrides in place5. Existing Equipment is within Life Expectancy
If you have answered “yes” to the above key indicators, it’s time to explore an RCx Opportunity!
