Efficiency Assessments: Why an Energy Checkup is a Good Idea

Homes and commercial buildings consume 40% of the energy used in the United States. Of the $2,000 the average American spends paying for energy annually, $200 to $400 could be going to waste from drafts, air leaks around openings, and outdated heating and cooling systems. By reducing these losses through energy efficiency upgrades, you can save money and be more comfortable in your home or business.

Hunton Services can help you get started with a FREE energy assessment.

Start with an Energy Assessment

Completing a building energy assessment, also known as an energy audit or evaluation, is a wise first step to assess the ways in which your building consumes energy. An energy evaluation will identify what specific measures you can take to make your building more energy efficient. The evaluation might include a walk-through check-up or inspection, use of an infrared camera, a blower door, or other techniques to reveal the most effective approaches to upgrading your home or building.

Energy Improvements Will Result in a Better Building

Below are the most commonly recommended measures from an energy evaluation that can help you save energy and save money—resulting in a better, more efficient, and more comfortable building. Hunton Services can help you identify the specific improvements that make sense for your business.

Typical building energy improvements:

A. Install more energy efficient windows, doors, and skylights. Air infiltrates into and out of your building through every hole and crack. Much of this air infiltrates through openings in your windows, doors, and skylights. More energy efficient windows can significantly reduce heat loss through windows.

B. Install or upgrade your building automation system (BAS). It will save energy by automatically regulating your building’s temperature when you are there AND when you are away. You could save a significant amount on your heating and cooling bills by simply updating your building’s technology.

C. Seal ducts and make sure they are straight and properly connected. Many duct systems are not insulated properly or have gaps or holes where air can leak out. You can lose up to 60% of your heated air before it reaches the register if your ducts are not insulated and they travel through unheated spaces.

D. Upgrade your heating and cooling systems. Heating and cooling your building uses more energy than any other system in your building. By combining proper equipment maintenance and upgrades with appropriate insulation, air sealing, and BAS, you can significantly cut your energy use for heating and cooling.

E. Install energy efficient lighting in your building. An average building dedicates a large portion of its energy budget to lighting. Using new lighting technologies can reduce lighting energy use by 50% to 75%.
